Changing Your Magento Admin URL

Once you have chosen to use Magento, you may be wondering if it is possible to change your Magento Admin URL.  The short answer to this is yes.  There is an easy way to change the default Magento Admin URL.  This will prevent access to the default login screen.  While this is not a complete security fix in regard to your Magento install, it will definitely raise the bar for anyone looking to gain access to your back-end.

So, how do you change your Magento Admin URL?  We’ll talk you through it below.

  1. Step 1: Firstly, you will need to login to the back-end of your Magento Store and visit System Cache Management. From there, you will need to flush the Magento cache and cache storage.
  2. Step 2: Make sure to close the browser tab you are working in, as this could write to the cache you have just cleared.
  3. Step 3: Using an FTP client, open your local.xml file and find the <admin><routers> section. Here, you will find the default Admin HTML name.  You can change the word ‘admin’ to something you are likely to remember.
  4. Step 4: Now you can log in to your new admin path. Browsing the original admin URL should now produce a page not found error, which is exactly what you want.
